Sandia Peak & Madrid

Sandia Peak in New Mexico is a great motorcycle ride up to 10500 feet. the winding road (NM-536) is lined with trees as in mostly good condition and the view is expansive. NM-165 is a dirt road.

You do have to be careful, however, as there was an hours-long backup at the bottom because a motorcyclist went wide and encountered a pickup truck. He apparently tried to pass the truck on the passenger side, but didn’t make it. Pieces of his bike can be seen behind the ambulance. It looked horrific, but the motorcylist survived with non-life-threatening injuries… until his wife gets through with him.

Madrid is a small town on NM-14 between Albuquerque and Santa Fe that was the setting for the Wild Hogs movie released in 2007. Maggies Diner was built as a set, but has remained as a tourist attraction. Worth a stop.
